200 visitors came to celebrate Fastelavn in Travbyen
The Green Community House provided the setting for a colourful day, where princesses, superheroes, animals and fantasy characters filled Travbyen with life. Right from the start, the community house was buzzing with excitement, and there were queues for cat barrels, carnival buns, face painting and the balloon artist.
Hitting the cat off the barrel was the highlight of the day. The children stood ready in age-divided groups and struck away, while parents and grandparents cheered from the sidelines. (Some parents couldn't resist joining in the barrel hitting and helped out along the way).
When the last boards fell to the ground, cat kings and cat queens were crowned, as is tradition.
In addition to beating the cat of the barrel, the day offered face painting, balloon artists, creative workshops where participants could make their own decorations and costumes. There were fastelavnsbuns and hot cocoa, and plenty of time to meet with other families and future neighbours.
One of the younger participants summed up the day:
‘It's been a really fun day – I'll be back next year.’
The reason we in Travbyen want to arrange an event like Fastelavn is because communities don't just happen on their own – they grow when we get together for something fun and informal. Fastelavn is a tradition that can bring generations together - where both children and adults can participate.
It is precisely this kind of everyday community that we want to make room for in Travbyen – even before you live here. For us, a day like this is not just about dressing up and beating a barrel, but about meeting, playing and cultivating community – together.
