Development of Travbyen
Building with conscious
At Travbyen, we want to contribute to Billund's development as a town and as a children's capital. That is why we have chosen to invest in Billund Travbane, which we will develop into a new and exciting district over the coming years.
Our ambition is for the new district to help bring Billund closer together with new connections for children, pedestrians and cyclists and new playful urban spaces where the whole town can come together.
The new district is being built at a time when sustainability is crucial to creating a good future for everyone. That is why we have a special focus on creating a district where we take responsibility for the climate, for nature and for each other. Being the capital of children also means being the capital of grandchildren. It is our shared responsibility to consider the opportunities for future generations to play, learn and live when we develop our city.
220.000m²
Travbyen is being built on a large 220,000 m² site that previously housed Billund Racetrack. The site where Travbyen is being developed is located between Vejlevej and Nordmarksvej and borders the forest and the area around Skulpturstien in Billund.
550-600
It is estimated that between 550 and 600 homes will be built in Travbyen. These will include a mix of housing types such as terraced houses, flats and urban villas. The homes will range in size from 40m² to 150m².
+2030
The final date for completion of the entire Travbyen development is not yet known, but it is expected to be sometime after 2030. However, the first residents can expect to move into the first homes at the end of 2026.
With Travbyen, we want to help demonstrate a way to reduce the climate and resource footprint of construction without compromising vibrant urban spaces and playful architecture.

Responsibility
In Travbyen, it should be easy and fun to make more sustainable choices in everyday life. We prioritise pedestrians and cyclists over cars on the city streets, and we support sharing schemes that make it easy to exchange, borrow and share common rooms, guest rooms, toys and much more.
In construction, we work with solutions that make everyday life both easier and greener for residents. We use robust and durable materials and think about flexibility from the outset, so that homes and common areas can be adapted to new needs over time.
The materials are carefully selected to reduce the climate footprint. They may be natural or recycled materials, and the quality is high so that the buildings can last a long time and accommodate many different functions over the years.
With Travbyen, we want to help raise the bar for how sustainably you can build. That is why we are developing model buildings that test new ways of reducing the carbon footprint, use of ressources and show what is possible.
All in all, we are creating Travbyen as a place where responsibility is a natural part of everyday life - without compromising on quality, well-being or community.
Architecture and design
The development of Travbyen is based on a simple idea: first, we create the framework for a good everyday life, then we think about the spaces, and finally we design the homes themselves.
To set the direction, a Value Programme has been drawn up that describes the goals and principles that will ensure that Travbyen becomes a positive addition - both for future residents, for Billund and for the environment.
The ambition is to create a neighbourhood that lives up to future expectations for sustainability and good neighbourly communities. That is why the neighbourhood has been planned to make it easy for residents to collaborate on everything from gardening and joint activities to practical everyday matters such as childcare and sharing solutions.
It should be evident in everyday life that Travbyen has been created for community, closeness and a relaxed atmosphere. The architecture is deliberately simple and unpretentious, and the details of the construction allow room for what is often overlooked: the playful, the quirky and the charming - qualities that make a neighbourhood easy to love and feel at home in.
We share knowledge with the entire industry
When the first residents move into Travbyen at the end of 2026, it will be into a neighbourhood where play, community and well-being are just as important bottom lines as the climate.
Architecture and urban planning are used as social tools to make it easier to live more sustainably in everyday life. Streets designed for people before cars, communal allotments and green courtyards not only create aesthetics – they create life, security and community.
‘Even the greenest buildings lose value if people don't want to live in them. Sustainability is about CO2 and ressources, but it's also about quality of life and how we build something that can stand the test of time and provide a framework for life for generations to come" - Christian Nørgaard, project director in Travbyen.
